Scott Roller :
Born in 1959 in Amarillo, Texas (USA). University music studies 1976-1981 in Texas (Univ. of Texas/Austin, 76-79, North Texas State/Denton, 80-81) and in Paris, France 79-80). 1980-83 active with the free improvisation quartet BL Lacerta as Artist-in-Residence in Dallas with support from the Texas Commission on the Arts, Chamber Music America, the Atlantic-Richfield Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts (his “Masters in Improvisation”). The collaboration with artists of widely divergent media forms (especially video/film, painting, dance, theater, poetry, performance) has ever since been a significant aspect of his activities as a cellist, teacher, improviser and composer for over 25 years.
German resident since 1984 in Stuttgart und Essen. Further composition studies, teacher in a “youth music school” in Gladbeck 1985-1988. 1987-89 full-time cellist in the Dortmund Philharmonic, on a project basis until 1998. In the 1990s, active with the Wolpe Trio (Essen), Musikfabrik NRW (Düsseldorf), ensemble avance (Stuttgart), the trombonist/composer Mike Svoboda, the organist/composer Gary Verkade (and their improvisation ensemble Synthese), extensive private cello teaching and the beginning of school projects in contemporary music and group improvisation (especially in the “Response” program in the Frankfurt area until 2004 and thereafter in Essen).
Since 2000 active with the violinist Ulrike Stortz in DuoMonolog, Ensemble >gelberklang<, the Helios String Quartet (all in Stuttgart), in the ensembles of Mike Svoboda and the American composer/guitarist Scott Fields (Cologne), several collaborations with the French dancer-choreographer Christine Brunel and the Polish painter Agata Schubert. Guest with Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), ensemble recherche (Freiburg) and willing collaborator in many improvisation- and composition-based projects of all kinds.
Represented as a cellist, improviser and composer on labels such as Wergo (Frankfurt), cybele (Dusseldorf), Kairos (Vienna), free elephant records (Wuppertal), New World Records (New York) and clean feed (Lisbon).
In 2005, co-founded Open_Music e.V. (Stuttgart), a non-profit organization for improvisation and artistic education which has been awarded numerous grants and prizes from national, state and local agencies and foundations. Open_Music, which has carried out more than 50 projects in the past 5 years with children, youth and young adults from a wide spectrum of social backgrounds, is part of the so-called Southern Network (Netzwerk Süd), an initiative of the National Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes) for innovative performance and education projects in the Stuttgart region from 2008-2011.

Musikstudium (Cello/Komposition) 1976-1981 an der University of Texas/Austin, L’ École Normale de Musique/Paris und North Texas State University/Denton. 1980-83 intensiv mit dem Improvisationsquartett BL Lacerta (Dallas) tätig als Künstler in Residenz mit Unterstützung von der Texas Commission on the Arts, Chamber Music America, der Atlantic-Richfield Foundation, und die National Endowment for the Arts (eine Art praktischer „Masters of Improvisation”). Die Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern sehr unterschiedlicher Medien (besonders Video/Film, Malerei, Theater, Tanz, Dichtung, Performance) ist seit damals ein zentraler, wiederkehrender Aspekt seiner Tätigkeiten als Cellist, Improvisator, Komponist und Pädagoge.
Lebt in Deutschland seit 1984 in Stuttgart und Essen. Nach weiteren Kompositionsstudien, Lehrtätigkeit in der Jugendmusikschule Gladbeck (1985-88). 1987-89 Cellist der Dortmunder Philharmoniker (danach als freier Mitarbeiter bis 1998). In den 90er Jahren spielte er mit dem dem Wolpe Trio (Essen), ensemble avance (Stuttgart), Musikfabrik NRW (Düsseldorf), mit dem Posaunisten/ Komponisten Mike Svoboda, mit dem Organisten/Komponisten Gary Verkade (u.a. in der Improvisationsensemble Synthese) und viel Einzelunterricht in Cello.
Seit 2000 aktiv mit der Geigerin Ulrike Stortz im DuoMonolog, im Ensemble >gelberklang< und im Helios Streichquartett (Stuttgart), in den Ensembles von Mike Svoboda und dem amerikanischen Gitarristen/Komponisten Scott Fields; Konzerte u. Filmmusik mit Michael Riessler, Mitwirkung im Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), ensemble recherche (Freiburg) und in vielen anderen Projekten wie mit der Tänzerin-Choreographin Christine Brunel, der Malerin Agata Schubert und zahlreichen ImprovisatorInnen aller Gattungen.
Vertreten als Cellist und Komponist auf vielen CDs bei Labels wie Wergo (Frankfurt), cybele (Düsseldorf), Kairos (Wien), free elephant (Wuppertal), New World Records (New York) und cleanfeed (Portugal).
Nach langjähriger Erfahrung in der Arbeit mit Jugendlichen durch seine Tätigkeit als Workshopleiter allein und mit den Response-Projekten (Neue Musik macht Schule) sowohl in Hessen wie auch in NRW und mit dem Clash Programm (Beginner Konzerte) in Stuttgart, gründete er 2005 zusammen mit Ulrike Stortz und anderen Stuttgarter Kollegen Open_Music e.V. („Wege zur Improvisation: Improvisation als Weg“) welcher schon einige Preise auf Landes- und Bundesebenen (z.B. „Kinder zum Olymp“ von der Kulturstiftung der Länder, Sonderpreis der Deutschen Bank, Förderpreis der Stadt Stuttgart) gewonnen hat. Open_Music ist auch eingebunden im NetzwerkSüd, ein Förderprojekt der Bundesstiftung für Kultur für die Jahren 2008-2011 (Netzwerk Neue Musik).
